Airlines Etihad and Emirates can merge

The owners of the leading Emirates airlines Emirates (Dubai) and Etihad (Abu Dhabi) are in talks about their possible merger, according to Handelsblatt.

The reason of negotiations is in the reduction in profits - in Emirates in the first half of 2016-2017 profits fell by 75% due to the strong dollar to which the Emirate dirham is tied, and "difficult market conditions".

The merger of the two airlines into a single national carrier will require great efforts and complex coordination between the authorities and the owners' families, but "such an opportunity is no longer unrealistic", experts said.
