A single bitcoin, BTCUSD, dropped 5.4 percent to $3,810.53, on the Kraken crypto exchange. The broadly selling has led to loss of almost $10 billion of the total value of all cryptocurrencies.

Among other popular crypto coins, Ether has dipped 12 percent to $131.66, Litecoin sank 11.7 percent to $34.57, Bitcoin Cash was 13.1 percent lower at $137.40 and XRP lost 5.9 percent at 34 cents.

The Cboe Global Markets front-month contract shed 5.9 percent to $3,750, and the CME Group February contract had tumbled 5.8 percent to $3,750.

The recent losses in cryptocurrencies have denied a positive start to 2019. Double-digit declines were posted in some coins, while Ripple surpassed Ether to become the second-biggest token by market capitalization.
