New cars registrations growth in EU slowed to 2.1% in June from 7.6 percent increase in May, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association data showed.
At the same time, total passenger car sales rose to just more than 1.54 million units, the strongest figure since June 2007, just before the global economic crisis.
Sales in Italy and Spain increased 12.9 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, while the UK's figure dropped 4.8 percent and in Germany slipped 3.5 percent.
EU car sales in the first half of the year rose 4.7% to more than 8.2 million units. Germany's Volkswagen Group earned first place with a 23.3% share of sales.
