GSMA delays implementation of new cellphone technology

GSMA, a group that represents the interests of mobile operators, said it delays rollout of eSIM standards until the completion of a U.S. Department of Justice probe. The organization said that it intends to cooperate with the authorities.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation to determine whether GSMA and a number of mobile operators prevented consumers from using easily switching carriers with devices that support eSIM. Among the suspects may be such operators as Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile и Verizon.

eSIM technology allows to change the operator without changing the SIM card, and it is not beneficial for mobile operators - in the U.S. there is a practice of selling devices that are linked to a specific SIM card and tariff.

Another advantage of eSIM technology is that device manufacturers won't have to accommodate a SIM card slot in their phones. This will make the body of the device thinner and provide better protection against moisture and dust.
