Inflation in Germany rises above forecasts in December

German inflation jumped above forecasts in December, the Federal Statistics Office reported on Friday. Consumer prices rose 1.6 percent from the same month a year earlier, while analysts polled by Reuters had expected a rise of 1.4 percent.

Prices grew 0.8 percent compared to November, faster than the 0.6 percent surge analysts had forecast.

Inflation data from Europe’s biggest economy is closely watched because of its impact on the European Central Bank’s monetary policy.
