Merkel wins 32.5 percent of German vote

Angela Merkel’s CDU/CSU alliance took 33 percent of the vote in Sunday’s German election. It is a fourth term in office for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Their closest rivals, the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), won only 20.0 percent, a new post-war low and would go into opposition.

Merkel’s party remained the largest parliamentary bloc and Europe’s most powerful leader said her party would set about forming a new coalition by Christmas.
