U.S. jobless claims rise by 17,000 in a week ended Jan. 20

The number of U.S. citizens filing for unemployment benefits increased less than anticipated in a week ended Jan. 20., indicating tightening labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits grew by 17,000 to 233,000, the Labor Department reported on Thursday.

Despite increasing number of new applications for unemployment benefits, their number is still below the long-term average, as companies try to retain employees in the face of a shortage of qualified personnel.
