U.S. retail sales leap in September

U.S. retail sales soared 1.6 percent in September, their biggest rise in 2-1/2 years, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Retail sales rose 4.4 percent year-on-year.

The economy increased at a 3.1 percent annual rate in the April-June period.
