VW launches programme to scrap older diesel cars

Volkswagen UK has launched a trade-in scheme across its brands, offering customers discounts on its new cars of between £1,800 and £6,000 to buyers who trade in older diesel models.

Rivals in the UK, including BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Vauxhall have already launched scrappage schemes.

Diesel cars have been under control over high levels of toxic nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution due to VW's dieselgate emissions scandal.

Car makers have been faced global criticism to encourage consumers to buy more electric and hybrid cars instead of older petrol and diesel ones.
