India's Jobless Rate Slips to Four-Month Low of 5.1% in July

NEW DELHI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - India's unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above fell to 5.1% in ​July, matching its lowest level in four months, ‌government data showed on Monday.

A Reuters poll had projected the July unemployment rate at 5.4%, compared with 5.5% in June. In ​March, the rate stood at 5.1%.

Here are some ​details:

-The rural unemployment rate fell to 4.5% in July ⁠from 5.0% in June, while the urban rate ​edged up to 6.7% from 6.6%, National Statistics Office data ​showed.

-Among people aged 15 and above, the unemployment rate for men fell to 5.0% in July from 5.3% in June, while the ​rate for women declined to 5.4% from 5.9%.

- The ​labour force participation rate, which measures the share of people aged ‌15 ⁠and above who are working or seeking work, rose to 55.4% in July from 54.4% a month earlier, the National Statistics Office said in its monthly Periodic Labour ​Force Survey bulletin.

- ​The worker ⁠population ratio, a measure of the proportion of people employed, increased to 52.5% from ​51.4%.

-Female labour-force participation rose to 34.4% from ​32.7% in ⁠June, driven by an increase in rural female participation to 38.8% from 36.6%.

- The figures are based on the ⁠Current ​Weekly Status measure under India's PLFS ​report, covering 371,021 people nationwide, including 211,411 in rural areas and 159,610 ​in urban areas.
