India's Sept Fuel Consumption Rises 3.9% from Previous Month

Oct 6 (Reuters) - India's fuel consumption in September rose 3.9% from the previous month to 19.26 million ​metric tons, data from the Petroleum Planning ‌and Analysis Cell of the oil ministry showed on Tuesday.

  • The September reading was also up 3.4% from ​a year earlier.

  • Diesel consumption rose 2% ​from August and was up 5.4% from ⁠a year earlier.

  • Gasoline sales fell 4.4% from August, ​but were up about 7.9% from a year ​earlier.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption rose 8.5% from August, but was down about 9.2% from a year earlier.

  • Naphtha sales ​fell 16.2% from August and were down ​about 25.2% from a year earlier.

  • Consumption of bitumen, used ‌primarily ⁠in road construction, jumped 34.7% from August and rose about 6.1% from a year earlier.

  • Fuel oil usage rose 5.5% from August and was ​up about ​3.9% from ⁠a year earlier.

  • India has cut windfall taxes on exports of diesel and aviation ​turbine fuel effective October 1, according ​to ⁠a government order in late September. The government reintroduced the tax in March 2026 after crude ⁠prices ​jumped during the US-Israeli war ​on Iran.
